Battery Cables: Professional Car Battery Cables | ACDelco

ACDelco Professional Battery Cables are a high-quality replacement component for many vehicles on the road today. The cable core is made up of multiple strands of 99 percent pure copper alloy for maximum flexibility and conductivity. ACDelco Professional Battery Cables are highly conductive and their durable outside insulation helps resist harsh under-hood environments. These premium aftermarket replacement Battery Cables are manufactured to meet or exceed your expectations for fit, form and function.

  • Tough cross-linked synthetic rubber insulator casing that resists burning, softening or melting in high heat and resists corrosion from chemicals and road splash
  • 99 percent pure copper cables to maximize conductivity and quick cold-weather starts
  • Lightweight for improved flexibility
  • Steel skeleton embedded in casting for more reliable electrical connection
  • Casting overlaps cable insulation to protect cable from corrosion, which is the primary cause of cable failure
  • Meets SAE J1127 standards

Did You Know?

Most vehicle breakdowns are due to one of five causes:

  • Out of gas.
  • Stalled/engine won’t start.
  • Dead battery.
  • Flat tire.
  • Overheated engine.

Most of these breakdowns can be avoided through the following measures:

  1. Periodic mechanical checkups, especially when engine stalling, hard starting or other such symptoms are signaling trouble.
  2. Regular tire inspection to spot damage, unusual wear or underinflation that can lead to the failure.
  3. Seasonal checks and preventive maintenance of the cooling system, a frequent factor in roadside breakdowns.
  4. Be sure the gas cap is on tight after filling up to safeguard against condensation in the tank. If moisture in the gas line freezes, the engine can stall.

Also, having a cellular phone or portable CB radio is of great benefit while traveling.

What It Does:

The Starting and Charging System starts the engine, maintains the battery’s charge and provides power to the electrical accessories while the engine is running.

Signs of Wear & Troubleshooting:

Signs that your battery cables might need to be replaced or are failing include:

  • Breaks or tears in the casing lining around the wires.
  • Resistance when bent – corrosive acid inside of the plastic sheeting will make it difficult to bend the cables.
  • White powder or a green tint to the copper wires, indicating corrosion.

Good Maintenance Practices:

  • Inspect the battery cables and posts for good connections and/or signs of corrosion. Clean them if needed. When working around a battery, always make sure to take the appropriate safety precautions.
  • WARNING: Battery posts, terminals and related accessories contain lead, lead compounds and cadmium chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer and reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling!
  • Terminal Installation:
    • Step 1: Align the terminal and pull the wire from the back of the connector in order to seat the terminal.
    • Step 2: If necessary, cut the new wire to proper length and splice with existing circuit.
    • Step 3: If the connector is outside of the passenger compartment, apply dielectric grease to the connector.
    • Step 4: Install the TPA, CPA and/or the secondary locks.

What are some specifications and standards I should consider when choosing an automotive cable?

  • You should always look for the Original Equipment Cable or one that is designed to the original fit, form and function.

Should I replace my battery cables when I get a new battery?

  • No, you should not always replace your battery cables when getting a new battery. Your battery cables should be inspected and changed if damaged or excessive corrosion is found.

Is the length of the wire or cable important for installation or performance?

  • Yes, the length of the wire or cable is important for fit and performance. Also, the gauge or thickness of the cable is important to carry the proper amperage. You should only use the wire or cable that is designed to meet the Original Equipment fit, form and function.
