ACDelco Offers Fuel Economy Tips for More Efficient Driving
GRAND BLANC, MICH. — Motorists seem to always be looking for ways to stretch their fuel dollars, from seeking out service stations with the lowest prices to finding ways to get the most out of every gallon of gasoline.
According to Stephanie Gehl, portfolio manager, ACDelco Quick Service Products, one of the simplest ways to help improve a vehicle's fuel economy is through regular preventive maintenance.
"Underinflated tires, clogged air filters and dirty spark plugs make engines and other vehicle components work harder," Gehl said, "and an engine that has to work harder uses more fuel. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates a vehicle owner can save up to $690 — based on a 16-gallon fuel tank refilled once a week — by following basic preventive maintenance."
ACDelco recommends the following tips to help improve a vehicle's fuel economy:
- Get regular tune-ups and emissions tests
- Have brake maintenance performed at recommended intervals
- Keep radiator inlet surfaces clear of bugs and debris
- Check rear shocks for wear; replace, if necessary
- Replace air filter regularly
- Properly inflate tires and check tire pressure regularly
- Use recommended oil grade
- Plan trips and driving routes to avoid traffic congestion
- Drive smoothly and use cruise control when traffic conditions allow
- Limit use of accessories such as air conditioning and heated seats
- Don't carry more than you need; the added weight from golf clubs, bikes and bike racks, tool chests, bowling bowls, etc., can reduce fuel efficiency
- Observe posted speed limits and avoid idling
